Jacqueline Birkness-Gartman, MD, FASCP


Jacqueline (Jackie) Birkness-Gartman, MD, FASCP, is an assistant professor of Gastrointestinal and Liver Pathology at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, MD, where she previously completed her pathology residency and gastrointestinal and liver pathology fellowship. She received her bachelor’s degree in molecular and cellular biology from Johns Hopkins University, followed by her medical degree at University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. She is board certified in anatomic and clinical pathology, and is a fellow of ASCP and a member of the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology.

Dr. Birkness-Gartman’s practice reflects her passions: supporting excellent patient care and training the next generation of pathologists. Her clinical work consists of signing out gastrointestinal and liver pathology cases, often alongside trainees. She plays an active role in pathology education at Johns Hopkins, serving as the assistant director of the Gastrointestinal and Liver Pathology Fellowship, director of the annual gastrointestinal and liver pathology continuing medical education course, and co-director of the medical school pre-clinical gastroenterology and hepatology course. Dr. Birkness-Gartman has also designed interactive learning modules covering introductory gastrointestinal pathology, which are now freely available online, and co-authored an iPad application on appendiceal pathology.
