Kathleen Byrnes, MD, FASCP


Kathleen Byrnes, MD, FASCP, is an associate professor practicing GI and liver pathology at Washington University in St. Louis, MO. She received her undergraduate degrees in biomedical and chemical engineering from Washington University in St. Louis and is a graduate from Tulane University School of Medicine. At Tulane University, she fostered her passion for pathology while researching the role of microRNAs in hepatic carcinomas. She completed her anatomic and clinical pathology residency at Washington University in St. Louis, serving as chief resident. Subsequently, she was the John Yardley GI/liver pathology fellow at Johns Hopkins. Dr. Byrnes is a distinguished educator who serves as the associate director for GI/liver pathology fellowship and the medical school clerkship director for the third- and fourth-year surgical pathology clerkships. In addition to medical education and mentorship, Dr. Byrnes is passionate about medical and transplant liver pathology research, including quality assurance and collaborative projects. She has delivered numerous lectures, presented scientific papers and has published papers on a variety of topics within GI and liver pathology.
