Rachel Childs, MS, MLS(ASCP)CM
Rachel Childs, MS, MLS(ASCP)CM is a clinical assistant professor and program director for the Medical Laboratory Science program at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA. She serves as the primary advisor to more than 20 students and teaches Clinical Hematology courses in the program. As an ASCP board-certified laboratory professional, she maintains her laboratory skills at Maryview Medical Center in Portsmouth, VA. Ms. Childs received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in clinical laboratory science from Virginia Commonwealth University. She is pursuing a doctorate in health sciences with a concentration in education from Radford University, in Radford, VA. Ms. Childs has a passion for promoting laboratory medicine and raising awareness of the field, often participating in recruitment and career exploration events within and outside of her institution. She stands out as an instructor through her use of incorporating virtual microscopy outside the classroom. She provides her students with access to image banks and laboratory-created videos, allowing them to reinforce their cellular identification skills without having to physically be in a laboratory. She aims to collaborate with organizations to showcase these images to a wider audience to increase awareness of laboratory microscopy and to showcase the incredible cellular constituents we visualize every day. Ms. Childs is honored to receive this recognition before the age of 30 and considers it one of the most remarkable milestones in her career thus far.
