At this year’s Annual Meeting, our focus on DEI and global health will help shape the future of patient care. From ensuring equitable access to healthcare services to addressing disparities in diagnostic accuracy and treatment outcomes, our discussions will be both enlightening and actionable.
We will also be joined by two keynote speakers whose experience in DEI and global health embody the spirit of our meeting. Prominent civil rights activist, advocate for social justice, and global humanitarian, Martin Luther King III, is an inspiration for us to strive for a more equitable healthcare system. Ambassador Dr. John Nkengasong, U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator and Senior Bureau Official for Global Health Security and Diplomacy, highlights for all the interconnectedness of health across borders. Their presence underscores the significance of our mission and the urgency with which we must address DEI and global health challenges in our field.
At ASCP 2024, attendees will gain a better understanding of integrating global health perspectives into research and practices and promoting health equity on a global scale. You’ll gain practical diversity, equity, and inclusion education, and a clearer vision around the issues of access to healthcare that so many of our patients experience, and how the laboratory can be a leader in closing the gaps.
Martin Luther King Ill is a leading voice for peace, justice, and equity in the U.S. and globally. His work has had a transformative impact, and his keynote address will celebrate unity, equity, and inclusion that will inspire conversations and actions that will bring us a better tomorrow and help shape a more just society for all.
Global health is local health, and Dr. John Nkengasong's experience as the U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator and Special Representative for Global Health Diplomacy is a testament to his profound impact on both. His leadership in overseeing PEPFAR, which has made historic strides in addressing HIV/AIDS, highlights the power of strategic intervention in global public health, and his tenure as the first director of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention further underscores his ability to drive transformative change. Inspired by these achievements, ASCP 2024 attendees can learn how to better integrate global health values into their practice and leverage the power of collaborations, and importantly, prioritizing equity and inclusivity in healthcare delivery for all.
Promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in laboratories—both for the workforce and for patients—ensures that diverse perspectives, experiences, and talents are leveraged, leading to more innovative solutions and enhanced problem-solving capabilities. A diverse workforce brings forth a range of ideas and approaches, enriching research outcomes and fostering a culture of creativity and collaboration. This diversity enables healthcare professionals to better understand and respect cultural nuances, leading to more personalized care. When the laboratory addresses disparities and ensures comprehensive patient understanding, we put patient-centric care at the core of what we do and create more equitable access and care for all.
Join us at ASCP 2024 and look to the future of healthcare, and how the combined powers of global health and DEI in the laboratory can contribute to the building of a more resilient and adaptable workforce. We are StrongerTogether when we foster a culture of inclusivity and equity, and continue to lead within healthcare, and provide the high-quality care that all patients deserve.
