Ensure the Future of Laboratory Medicine

Nov 16, 2022, 11:12 AM by Colleen M. Nolan

The American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Foundation was built on three pillars that advance the Society's service to members: improving the visibility of the important work of the medical laboratory; supporting ASCP’s efforts in global health; and providing resident and student scholarships, grants, and fellowships. Each of these efforts provide ASCP members the opportunity to make their association and profession stronger in the future.

The Foundation’s Scholarship Fund provides financial support to outstanding pathology residents to help them expand their knowledge, skills, and professional network. Clinical laboratory students are assisted through scholarships for books and tuition. The Foundation provides grants to medical laboratory science program directors to support the purchase of education-related materials and other training program resources. It also provides fellowships to students, pathology residents, and fellows to expand their experience and knowledge. Some of the scholarship, grant, and fellowship opportunities offered by the Foundation are listed at the bottom of the page.To learn more about these opportunities, their deadlines, and related selection criteria visit www.ascp.org/scholarships.

While the ASCP Foundation is proud to offer these scholarship, grant, and fellowship opportunities in 2018, the need for support far exceeds donations. Based on the number of inquiries from laboratory students and residents, the Foundation needs $200,000 in donations annually. Currently, the Foundation has just over $20,000 in its Scholarship Fund. “When you have students choosing between food and books, there is clearly a significant need for student scholarships,” shared Nathan H. Johnson, PhD, MASCP, MT(ASCP)DLM,SC,SLS. “As a program director, I see students in need each day. That’s why I give as much as I can to the ASCP Scholarship Fund. It is a way to invest not only in students, but also in the future success of laboratory medicine.”
