A collaborative leader and mentor, Maha Al-Asmakh, MSc, PhD, CTgyn(ASCPi)CM has dedicated her career to developing future scientists, expanding collaborative research ecosystems, and advancing women’s health research.

“A key part of my work is empowering students and faculty through mentorship, fostering a supportive research environment, and expanding opportunities for undergraduate and graduate scientific engagement. I am passionate about generating knowledge that can positively impact public health, clinical practice, and scientific innovation.” shares Dr. Al-Asmakh.

As an associate professor and chair of the Biomedical Sciences Department at Qatar University, Dr. Al-Asmakh oversees academic programs, faculty development, and research initiatives. “My current priorities include advancing accreditation processes, enhancing program quality, and strengthening interdisciplinary collaborations,” she says.

“Looking ahead, my next major goals include expanding multi-omics research on maternal and perinatal health, deepening international collaborations, and securing competitive grants that translate research findings into real-world health benefits. I am also committed to strengthening departmental research infrastructure and advancing new initiatives that support student research, interdisciplinary projects, and international visibility for our programs.”

Dr. Al-Asmakh’s commitment to research is demonstrated by her other official leadership role, serving as lead for Qatar University’s Reproductive Medicine Research Network Group (RNG). The RNG brings scientists, researchers, and clinicians together to exchange expertise and discuss advances in reproductive and women’s health. “I hope my career contributes meaningfully to advancing women’s health research, strengthening scientific capacity in Qatar, and elevating the quality of biomedical education and research in the region,” says Dr. Al-Asmakh.

“My genuine curiosity for science, early exposure to research, and the guidance of exceptional mentors all inspired my career path. My mentors — within my family and academic circles— encouraged me to pursue research and leadership roles,” she notes. In addition to the global recognition and awards Dr. Al-Asmakh has received for her work, including being named to ASCP’s 2023 cohort of 40 Under Forty, she shares that, “a key source of pride in my career is seeing my students excel and receive awards at national and international conferences. I was so proud to see our senior MLS  students recognized as runners-up at this year’s LabQ competition during WHX Dubai in February. That achievement reflects their dedication, teamwork, and the strength of our training  program.”

When asked about her leadership style, Dr. Al-Asmakh described her style as, “collaborative, supportive, and transparent” and notes that she is working to create an environment with open communication, where faculty, staff, and students feel valued and empowered to reach their potential and that her faculty and staff, “share a mutual trust, commitment to excellence, and effective communication.”

“My advice to new leaders is to stay curious, seek feedback, build strong relationships, and embrace challenges as opportunities for growth. For students considering a similar career, I encourage them to explore deeply, remain resilient, and surround  themselves with mentors who inspire and challenge them,” she says.
